I've used this filter in a small koi pond for years works great. However when the black round foam filter gets clogged it's a pain to clean. Can bio balls be used instead of the foam. Heard they are great for housing good bacteria and easier to clean

Asked by: opsman
If you wish to have them just offer biological filtration and are not trying to keep the pump from clogging, yes. A pre-filter is typically to prevent the pump from clogging. Bio balls are NOT that easy to clean either, in my experience. I have used them a lot, and the sludge/algae gets trapped in them, and instead of having one sponge to clean, you have to hose out each individual ball. Much harder than a sponge. Most likely yours is difficult because the pond is overstocked. An average adult koi requires 500-1000 gallons per fish, and you indicated you have a "small koi pond". There should never be a small koi pond. Koi ponds should always be several thousand gallons because of the size the fish grow to so you may be in need of a larger filter, if you do not have one on the pond besides this one. BREX

I need a pump that I can attach a filter to and also pump my waterfall

Asked by: Susans
We have pumps from 325 gph to 4200 gph, and various filters that connect to them. To determine what you need, you need to know how many gallons your pond is, how deep it is, how high and how wide the waterfall will be. Waterfalls typically require 100 gph for every inch of weir (width of the falls) so to have a decent sized waterfall, you will need around 800-1200 gph at the top of it, after accounting for the head and the depth of the pond. how do I connect this pre-filter to my pump?

Asked by: doquilt
It comes with a short piece of tubing and two adaptors. One screws into the pre-filter and you push the tubing over it and connect it with a hose clamp. The other adaptor screws into the pump so you can push the tubing over it, and connect with a hose clamp. The adaptors are specifically suited to the Water Garden Pumps by Tetra. BREX

How to hook it up to the pump

Asked by: Old lady
You would need a hose clamp and proper adaptor for the pump. Most pumps come with adaptors. If the pump takes a different tubing ID, then use a pvc reducer to connect two pieces tubing of different sizes. BREX

How does this filter work. It is sold as a fountain filter in Menards. There is an input flange but no out put. How does the water pass through it into the fountain. A simple drawing would help. Advise

Asked by: bg12345
This attaches to a submersible water pump as a pre-filter. Water is drawn in through the round basket, and then through the foam inside it, into the pump itself, and out the pump's outlet. BREX

How do I take apart filter to clean

Asked by: Jack sparrow
The end opposite from where you attach the pre-filter has a cap you twist off. You might need a jar opener to get a good grip. BREX
