A Checklist for Bulding a Successfull Pond

Here is a list of the basic items you’ll need to create your pond. The specifics about size, type and capacities will be covered in other parts of this website.

Checklist for ongoing maintenance
  • Regularly clean your filter mats, pre filters, bio-media, and, if your filters are equipped, back-flush them to keep them operating efficiently. Bacteria and sludge accumulate more quickly in the warm weather.
  • Watch for diminished water flow—this could mean a clogged intake or filter.
  • Remove any accumulated debris from the bottom of the pond.
  • Examine fish for activity to ensure they are not struggling and are visibly healthy.
  • Every spring and fall (or any time you are restarting or shutting down your pond), replace at least 25% of the pond water with tap water. Remember to add a water conditioner, such As TetraPond's AquaSafe.
  • If you haven’t changed the UV bulb for the past two seasons, change it. Hot sunny weather means algae, and you want your water UV clarifier to work at peak efficiency.
  • It is not unnatural for your pond to lose an inch after several days of hot weather due to evaporation, especially if you have a fountain and other water features running. If it appears to be dropping much faster, however, check for a leak.
