SafeStart accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums.

The live bacteria in SafeStart start working immediately to provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish without the long wait. SafeStart also reduces ammonia and nitrite, as well as fish loss caused from new tank cycle. Use to cycle new aquariums or replenish the good bacteria after maintenance.
Tetra SafeStart is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only Product with the Right Bacteria I bought this product a week ago after looking at the ingredients and realizing these are the actual bacteria that allow the nitrogen cycle to happen. It got my partially cycled tank cycled in three days time! The only thing I don't like is that you can use prime with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WORKS!!! I was very skeptical about this product even after reading good reviews. I decided to buy it after setting up my new 50 gallon aquarium and letting it sit a week with no fish. Went to Walmart bought enough TSS for 60 gallons and 6 Cherry Barbs, that was on a Sunday. By Thursday I had readings of 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and less then 5.0 nitrate. This product cycled my fish tank in 5 days. Thank you Tetra!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Bacteria Product Hands Down... I've been using this product for years on multiple new aquarium setups from 20 Gal to 150 Gallon tanks. It has worked perfectly every time with a full load of fish immediately. Zero to very minimal Ammonia or Nitrite spikes with Nitrates appearing within a few days. It works fine with Prime conditioner. Only possible issue I've seen is if you wait to long to add the product and the ammonia is too high already. If Ammonia is greater than about 2 PPM it may kill the bacteria. Forget about the other bacteria products, this one does indeed work as advertised. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If tank cycled, Do I need to stop using it? after 1 week, my 30gal tank is ammonia = 0.5 nitrite=0 and nitrate=5. Does it mean it is cycled? Any help appreciated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best on the market!!! After trying other products to start a cycled tank I paid the price for safestart. Yes it is a bit pricey but we'll worth it. No need to wait weeks to cycle your aquarium. After all a fishnets cycle is a boring aquarium. Yes there are many of other products that claim to start beneficial bacteria but they don't seem to work for me. Being a breeder of fresh water angelfish I need a product that works. I have in the past set up 55 gallon aquariums waited about 15 minutes after adding dechlorinator. Added a small bottle of safestart then added 30 quarter body size angels and never had a problem. Tested water daily to be safe and never found ammonia or nitrites. I only use chemical test kits because I found the tank dips are not accurate. So for those of you that are setting up for the first time use this product. You will be happy you did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safe Start best product for a new tank I set up a new 125 gallons tank for Cichlid Peacock & Haps and because I don't like to wait 2 or 3 weeks I just add the TSS the next day with 12 cichlids & wait 2 days and add another 8.4 oz of TSS with the others 12 fish and 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and after 1 week start doing my reg 25% water change, best product for those like me that do not wan't to wait 3 weeks to add fish to a new tank.

What dosage do i use for 1.5 gallon tank?

Asked by: tedlinder
There is no wrong dosage as this is just live bacteria, but we would recommend 1-2 teaspoons, just to avoid wasting the product. BREX

i usually use right start and it is immediate takes the ammonia right out and you can add fish instantly however the store that i went to this morning didn not have any so i got is stuff, now i dont know if this is immediate or what/ CAN SOMEONE HEL I

Asked by: LISA65
SafeStart is nothing but cultured bacteria and it will establish your biological filter. Yes, it gradually breaks down ammonia, but it is done naturally, without chemicals, and depending on the levels in the tank, can take a few days. Start Right is a chemical that removes chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals. It does not remove ammonia. BREX

Did i stall my cycle by doing a 50% water change 6 days after using safestart ? Ammonia .50 ppm, nitrites 0 and nitrates.5. My 55 g tank has fish in, about half stocked, and a lot of live plants. Ammonia has been at .50 for over a week.

Asked by: Vix B
Possibly, although since the nitrites are 0 and nitrates are registering, you are probably through most of the initial cycle. Your ammonia level shouldn't stay at the same level for days on end, no matter what, so test the testing kit by testing tap water to see if the ammonia reading still reads .50. If it does, your kit is faulty, if it doesn't, then add some more SafeStart Plus. Don't do any water changes as high as 50% though. Try to stay at 30% or less. BREX

Brand new 13 gallon tank. Is it recommended to use an entire bottle of safe start plus 100ml or should I only use a portion of it? If so, how much?

Asked by: Atlas
An entire 100 ml bottle will treat a brand new 40 gallon tank. So in your case, we would recommend half a bottle. Shake it thoroughly first. BREX

What is the difference between Safe start and Safe start Plus? Also I started safe start to my 10GL tank 6 days ago Ammonium is 0.5ppm nitrites 0ppm but the nitrates are 40ppm would you recommend a partial water change?

Asked by: steves
At this point, yes, a small water change. Your tank is almost completely cycled, so no more than about 10%. The levels are fine, but you want to keep the nitrates down around 10 ppm if possible. SafeStart is less concentrated than SafeStart Plus. BREX

Is it safe to use Aquasafe for water change after dosing a tank with Safe start 6 days ago.  Is it safe to use prime 6 days after Safe start

Asked by: steves
Hi steves! Yes, it's completely safe to use Aqua Safe for water change 6 days after using Safe Start. Prime is a product of SeaChem we are unable to comment on. Please reach out to them for assistance with their product.

How or what process can I follow using your product Safe Start and doing a "fish less cycle". I have just finished setting up a 300 gallon fresh water tank for African Cichlids and wanted to use your product

Asked by: MD777
Then we would recommend you add your first group of African cichlids along with SafeStart Plus at the same time. You don't need to do all the work and wait all that time for "fishless cycling". SafeStart Plus will cycle the tank safely for you and the fish. BREX
