Responsible Fishkeeping

Aquariums are fun, relaxing, rewarding, therapeutic and educational. As manufacturers and fishkeepers ourselves, we take great pride in making top quality products while helping educate our fellow fishkeepers to ensure they are successful, and their fish are healthy and happy. The general rule for tank size is one inch of fish per gallon. However other factors should be considered, such as:

  • How large will the fish be as an adult?
  • Is it species that is active and needs larger space? Or is it a solitary fish?
  • Is it a schooling fish that needs to be in groups of five or more?
  • Is it a fish that produces a lot of waste?
  • Is it a species that is aggressive, does best with others of the same species type, or is it a more peaceful type that would be a good fit in a community tank?
Small aquariums are a great way to get started in the freshwater hobby, and with any new hobby involving   living creatures, it is always best to learn as much as you can. And when buying fish, ask your retailer for guidance in choosing the right fish for your size aquarium.

This aquarium is appropriate for keeping one Betta or up to two community tropical fish (We don’t recommend goldfish in any kit smaller than three gallons due to waste levels.)

While Tetra® brand takes pride in producing quality products, it is important to understand these freshwater starter aquariums offered by Tetra are not suitable for keeping saltwater fish. Saltwater aquariums require more advanced types of filtration, larger sized aquariums for most marine species, an understanding of saltwater chemistry, and special feeding and care regimens. We encourage our customers to learn more about all aspects of fishkeeping by visiting the links below, joining our Facebook pages, signing up for TetraCare.com, or calling our customer service at 800-526-0650.

1 Gallon Bubbling LED Desktop Aquarium Kit is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Far too small for a betta, or 2 fish... Those from the fish keeping community would wholeheartedly agree that a 1 gallon tank is far too small for a betta fish (or any fish). If you are considering this tank for a betta, consider (at minimum) a 3 gallon tank with a filter and heater. Tetra has a 3 gallon model that is great for bettas (and comes with heater and filter)With the reference of 2 community freshwater fish, I would also advise against that. The waste from fish (and what you feed it) would spike ammonia levels and be potentially fatal. Personally, I would not have a single fish in a 1 gallon tank, as you would need to do multiple water changes weekly just to keep the toxin levels down. They are correct with their advisement against a goldfish, they would need a 10gl tank at minimum (with no heater...they are coldwater fish).I promise I am not trying to come off as a fish snob. :) I am just someone who has invested a great deal of time into the hobby and try to share advice with others.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not suitable for Betta This take is great. But, Betta fish also require heaters. They're are a tropical fish. I also don't agree with having the Bubbles turned on to high, as Betta fish don't do so well in currents. It tends to stress them out. Aswell as the filter, if you have a Betta in your tank make sure the filter is turned down low. Also, I seen a few pictures with fake plants and Betta fish. This is a big no, Betta fish will easily tear their beautiful fins on these. Real plants are the way to go, or silk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Making having a pet is easy! I am falling in love with this product. It gives me the piece of mind of owning fishes as pet. Beside the light glow in the dark, I enjoy the quiet filter inside.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from no bubbles It's a cool container, but the filter is quite loud and it does not make any bubbles (like the picture on the box would imply) - just light. I'm using it without the filter for my beta.

is it completely necessary to have the air pump attached

Asked by: casey123
Hi casey123, Yes, if you want any oxygen, or filtration to occur you need to have the air pump going. If you do not wish to have it operating, you can take out 25% of the water every day or so in place of filtering. BREX

Asked by: Sharry
Hi Sharry, This kit, since it is such a small one, does not have the lid available separately. BREX

The bubbles are working, but the lights aren't. Is there something I need to do other than plug them in?

Asked by: Fishy mommy
No, there is no switch, you should only need to plug them into an outlet or power strip. Please contact us directly at 1-800-526-0650 if you are unable to get them operational. BREX

Is there an above tank light suitable for this tank? The LED light inside is neat, but dim.

Asked by: HPunch
Not specifically for this tank, no. You could potentially use the Glofish 6" LED Light Stick and lay it on top. BREX

I got the one gallon led bubbler tank for a beta. Should be turning the light off at night and how I would do that without unplugging it causing the bubbler to stop as well. Also, could I keep the pump at same level if I got a check valve?

Asked by: Jay123
You would have to unplug the light part of the bubbler, but not the air pump, so you would still have air moving as the air is coming from the air pump through the ring around the lights, and is not related to the lights. Yes, if you get the check valve it can be either beside the tank or below it. BREX

we have lost our lid to our 1 gal hexagon aquarium, do you sell the item separately?

Asked by: bdatxmama
Unfortunately, no, we sure don't, since it's such a small, inexpensive kit. Parts rarely sell well for such items. BREX
