Responsible Fishkeeping

Aquariums are fun, relaxing, rewarding, therapeutic and educational. As manufacturers and fishkeepers ourselves, we take great pride in making top quality products while helping educate our fellow fishkeepers to ensure they are successful, and their fish are healthy and happy. The general rule for tank size is one inch of fish per gallon. However other factors should be considered, such as:

  • How large will the fish be as an adult?
  • Is it species that is active and needs larger space? Or is it a solitary fish?
  • Is it a schooling fish that needs to be in groups of five or more?
  • Is it a fish that produces a lot of waste?
  • Is it a species that is aggressive, does best with others of the same species type, or is it a more peaceful type that would be a good fit in a community tank?
Small aquariums are a great way to get started in the freshwater hobby, and with any new hobby involving   living creatures, it is always best to learn as much as you can. And when buying fish, ask your retailer for guidance in choosing the right fish for your size aquarium.

This aquarium is appropriate for keeping one Betta or up to two community tropical fish (We don’t recommend goldfish in any kit smaller than three gallons due to waste levels.)

While Tetra® brand takes pride in producing quality products, it is important to understand these freshwater starter aquariums offered by Tetra are not suitable for keeping saltwater fish. Saltwater aquariums require more advanced types of filtration, larger sized aquariums for most marine species, an understanding of saltwater chemistry, and special feeding and care regimens. We encourage our customers to learn more about all aspects of fishkeeping by visiting the links below, joining our Facebook pages, signing up for TetraCare.com, or calling our customer service at 800-526-0650.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Making having a pet is easy! I am falling in love with this product. It gives me the piece of mind of owning fishes as pet. Beside the light glow in the dark, I enjoy the quiet filter inside.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from no bubbles It's a cool container, but the filter is quite loud and it does not make any bubbles (like the picture on the box would imply) - just light. I'm using it without the filter for my beta.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from i love this little tank! I have this little tank in my office with a betta in it and I absolutely love it! any little kids that come in love to watch Leo (my bettas name is Leo). he's so happy, makes huge bubble nests and he's probably the healthiest fish i've ever owned! this tank though is seriously perfect for a betta, its a great size and having a filter in it helps so you don't have to do a full water change every day! I could go on forever about how awesome this tank is!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great starter kit My 3yr old son wanted a fish so we bought him a betta and this for a starter kit. It was a bit frustrating trying to get the bubble and pump flow to work at the same time but I got it and I must say the bubble affect is beautiful. The red one went out after a few days but I took it out n moved it a bit and it came back on yay! The colors are beautiful and make a nice reflection on my sons ceiling as a bouns a great night light affect. All in all we love it.

are there supposed to be bubbles coming out of bottom of filter or is it to suck in water, mine blows out air bubbles

Asked by: neffy
Yes, your filter is operated by an air pump so it will have bubbles going up the water tube and into the back of the filter, behind the cartridge. A small waterfall should come out over the spillway and back into the tank, but it will most likely have bubbles in it. BREX

my led light keeps flashing all the colors really fast then going back to normal transitioning colors. Can I fix it or just turn the lights off?

Asked by: juliad4
Make sure your LED light is plugged into a power strip with surge protection in case of a voltage issue. If it already is, then try unplugging the light, and waiting a few moments before plugging it back in. If you are unable to resolve this issue, then please give us a call and we will replace it for you. Our number is 1-800-526-0650. BREX

How do I know if the filter is working? I've never owned a filter for my fish before I just want to make sure I set it up right.

Asked by: Jordyn
Basically, water should be flowing over the little spout and back into the tank. The air pump sits outside the tank, tubing runs from the port on it to the port on the white tube under the filter. BREX

We just bought this and can't get the filter and bubbler to work. Are we doing anything wrong? It just makes a loud motor sound

Asked by: Linsey1234
There should be a flow valve inline with each item; the filter and the bubbler. Make sure you have opened them fully initially, to allow air to flow to both. You should start seeing some bubbles and possibly some water flow. Gradually adjust the flow to each until you achieve the amount you want for both of them. Do you think this would be a suitable Sea Monkey tank, if yes you think the filter would be strong enough to pull them through?

Asked by: GregLucente
The size of the tank would be perfect for your purpose, yes. The filter is actually pretty powerful and the sea monkeys could get pulled into it. I would recommend just operating the air stone, and not the filter since the sea monkeys need plenty of oxygen. You have that option since there are flow valves included with the kit. BREX

how do i set up the colors

Asked by: jordyyy
We appreciate your interest in this Tetra product! The LED bubbler simply needs plugging in to get the lights to turn on. The tubing you connect to the air pump will also run to the port on the bubbler. Once you plug the pump in, bubbles will begin to come out of the bubbler, however, it may take as long as 24 hours for it to be fully bubbling, as the air has to push through the water that fills the bubbler and begin to move consistently through it. Hi. Just curious, am I able to use the filter without the bubbler? It scares my betta. I love how it looks but if my fish is scared of it, i don't want to stress him out. Thanks

Asked by: katie23
Yes, your system comes with flow valves and tee connectors. You can easily configure it to have one or the other. If you want to operate just one item, remove the two short pieces of tubing, and connect the long one straight onto the air pump. BREX
