SafeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums.

afeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums. The live bacteria start working immediately to provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish without the long wait. SafeStart Plus can also be used after a water change, when adding fish or after medicating.

How SafeStart Plus works: New filters are sterile and take 30 to 40 days for bacteria to naturally form. With SafeStart Plus, all of the beneficial bacteria are seeded from the beginning, for instant, safe results.

Why SafeStart Plus is better:

  • Our patented filter bacteria are proven superior.
  • We grow the actual aquatic bacteria that are naturally found in aquariums. We do not use low cost industrial bacteria from terrestrial strains.
  • Our concentrated formula adds a full filter bed of bacteria with just one dose.
  • Live nitrifying bacteria start working immediately to reduce dangerous ammonia and nitrite.
  • Prevents new tank syndrome for healthy fish.
  • The patented mix of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, and Nitrospira is proven to work.
  • Shelf-stable formula requires no refrigeration for added convenience.

This product comes in the following sizes: 1.69 fl oz, 3.38 fl oz, 8.45 fl oz

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves Time, NO Die-Offs with new tanks I used Tetra Safe Start Plus in my brand new 54 gallon freshwater tank, in conjunction with a cannister filter system. I followed the labe and did introduce freshwater tropical fish within the first 24 hours, understanding that without fish, the bacteria in safestart wouldn't have anything to feed on.The results were spectacular, we tested the water each and every day and none of the harmful spikes in chemistry happened as they often do with newly populated aquarium environments.I'm writing this review a year later and could not be more impressed with the results. We're in the process of establishing a 100 gallon environment next and will use Safestart Plus again and I have no reason to think we'll have any problems at all.Thank you for this excellent source of bottled beneficial bacteria, I would recommend it without reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I used SafeStart on my aquarium started 10/22/17 My three Tetras are doing fine chasing each other around my ten gallon tank. Benificial bacteria and removal of chloring and ammonia are a must. I feel safe using Tetra's products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safestart Plus is perfect Safestart Plus is perfect. My Aquarium cycled in 6 days!I started a new 55 gallon tank & added a 8.45oz (250cc) bottle Safestart Plus and the fish. The ammonia never went over 0.5. Ammonia is currently = zero, Nitrites = zero, Nitrates = 20. Fish are very happy.Bottom line - I will NEVER start a tank without using Tetra Safestart Plus! I will also add small dose of Safestart when I change bio-media.ONLY ISSUE - the directions on the bottle are vague. Note – if you add Safestart Plus at the same time as the dechlorinator (Tetra AquaSafe) – the dechlorinator will kill all the beneficial bacteria in Safestart. So WAIT 24hrs after dechlorinator to use Safestart Plus

How much safe start for a 3 gallon tank?

Asked by: Mrhemme
How much to dose depends on if the tank is new or in need of a boost of its biological filter. For new tanks, use 1/4 of the 1.69 oz container. For boosting the filter, use 1 teaspoon for 5 gallons, so in your case, 1/3 of a teaspoon. BREX

I have a newly set up 10 gallon qt tank. It has been running 5 days now. My new fish show signs of ick. Is it ok to use aquarium salt while I’m still establishing the tank with safestart or will it disrupt the cycle?

Asked by: Jmattin52
Yes, it is fine to use salt at the same time. It will not hurt he cycling process. BREX

What do I do to top off the evaporated water if I use a different water conditioner than Tetra? Should I condition some water and let it set for a day before putting it in? When is it safe to use other conditioner?

Asked by: Knucklebaby
You should only need to condition it for several minutes, not a day. Not sure I understand your question about it being safe. BREX

I have a 3 gallon tank and I use well water, store told me to use safestart should I use all of the bottle? I have glow fish in there now had a shark but he didn't last a day. Any suggestions

Asked by: Ellwoods
No, you would use 1/4 of the bottle. You also need AquaSafe Plus since well water will have heavy metals in it. A 3 gallon tank is suitable for only 3 fish that grow to one inch in length, or 2 slightly larger fish, around 1.5" each. It is not large enough for any of the shark species. BREX

I have a un-nopened 3 month old bottle of tetra safe start thats still in date. It has been kept in a box in a cool area but i keep reading it should be refridgerated, even in stores. Will it be ok to use & my fish stay safe?

Asked by: wildtype
Yes. It does not have to be refrigerated. The posts you are most likely reading are from many years ago with the old packaging. It can be stored between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. BREX

Asked by: fishram
Thank you for asking a question! Cloudy water is not necessarily a bad thing especially with a new tank. For personalized advice we'll need more information about your set up so please call Tetra at 1-800-526-0650. We are happy to help!

Why is it suggested to wait several hours after dosing a water conditioner that binds or neutralizes ammonia before using TSS pls? Can TSS bacteria use locked ammonia as a food source? If it can't use locked ammonia, why can't It? Tx!

Asked by: angelcraze
Basically, because we have not researched any water conditioners besides AquaSafe Plus with SafeStart Plus, and many of them are too harsh, and could potentially harm the bacteria. BREX
