SafeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums.

afeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums. The live bacteria start working immediately to provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish without the long wait. SafeStart Plus can also be used after a water change, when adding fish or after medicating.

How SafeStart Plus works: New filters are sterile and take 30 to 40 days for bacteria to naturally form. With SafeStart Plus, all of the beneficial bacteria are seeded from the beginning, for instant, safe results.

Why SafeStart Plus is better:

  • Our patented filter bacteria are proven superior.
  • We grow the actual aquatic bacteria that are naturally found in aquariums. We do not use low cost industrial bacteria from terrestrial strains.
  • Our concentrated formula adds a full filter bed of bacteria with just one dose.
  • Live nitrifying bacteria start working immediately to reduce dangerous ammonia and nitrite.
  • Prevents new tank syndrome for healthy fish.
  • The patented mix of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, and Nitrospira is proven to work.
  • Shelf-stable formula requires no refrigeration for added convenience.

This product comes in the following sizes: 1.69 fl oz, 3.38 fl oz, 8.45 fl oz

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves Time, NO Die-Offs with new tanks I used Tetra Safe Start Plus in my brand new 54 gallon freshwater tank, in conjunction with a cannister filter system. I followed the labe and did introduce freshwater tropical fish within the first 24 hours, understanding that without fish, the bacteria in safestart wouldn't have anything to feed on.The results were spectacular, we tested the water each and every day and none of the harmful spikes in chemistry happened as they often do with newly populated aquarium environments.I'm writing this review a year later and could not be more impressed with the results. We're in the process of establishing a 100 gallon environment next and will use Safestart Plus again and I have no reason to think we'll have any problems at all.Thank you for this excellent source of bottled beneficial bacteria, I would recommend it without reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I used SafeStart on my aquarium started 10/22/17 My three Tetras are doing fine chasing each other around my ten gallon tank. Benificial bacteria and removal of chloring and ammonia are a must. I feel safe using Tetra's products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safestart Plus is perfect Safestart Plus is perfect. My Aquarium cycled in 6 days!I started a new 55 gallon tank & added a 8.45oz (250cc) bottle Safestart Plus and the fish. The ammonia never went over 0.5. Ammonia is currently = zero, Nitrites = zero, Nitrates = 20. Fish are very happy.Bottom line - I will NEVER start a tank without using Tetra Safestart Plus! I will also add small dose of Safestart when I change bio-media.ONLY ISSUE - the directions on the bottle are vague. Note – if you add Safestart Plus at the same time as the dechlorinator (Tetra AquaSafe) – the dechlorinator will kill all the beneficial bacteria in Safestart. So WAIT 24hrs after dechlorinator to use Safestart Plus

The pet store told me to just add TSS to the aquarium, wait 4 days and then add fish. Now I'm reading all kinds of things about adding fish right away. I also didn't condition the tab water so I have to start over or can I just add conditioner?

Asked by: Angelpuppypie
You can add the water conditioner, but you'll need to add more SafeStart Plus too, when you add the fish. You have to have at least one fish in the tank to feed the bacteria, they die rapidly, otherwise. BREX

Am I able to use this without fish, if I feed the tank some fish food for instance to produce the needed ammonia?

Asked by: Jonny212
As the bacteria need a constant source of food or they die off, fishless cycling does not work well with SafeStart Plus because you are putting thousands of bacteria in all at once, instead of gradually growing bacteria based on the amount of food you are feeding. Besides which, there is no point in fishless cycling when the SafeStart Plus takes care of the cycle for you without the fish enduring toxic levels of ammonia or nitrite. If you add the proper amount of fish, you'll cycle the tank without registering ammonia or nitrite ever. BREX

Hello, so we are starting a new tank and we didn't know we had to put this product in when we put the fish in. We put the product in about 12 hours ago. What should we do if we already put the product in?

Asked by: Bracer50
If you put the product in, and there were no fish, you will need to re-dose once you add fish to the tank. BREX

after I put it in the tank can I wait five days to add fish store said seven days then add fish

Asked by: chazz
No, you need to either have fish already in the tank or add them immediately after adding the SafeStart Plus, otherwise, the bacteria starve off. BREX

I used safe safe start a few weeks back not long after the conditioned water, now learnt that is a no no. Should I redose it?

Asked by: Chew123
Well, if you used AquaSafe Plus you didn't harm anything. If you used another brand, then you may want to dose again, but since it has been several weeks, if you are fully cycled, and the water quality is good, you may not need to at all. The tank can cycle on its own, and may have done so. BREX

I used a 250mL bottle of SafeStart Plus in my tank today and it was full of white precipitate so my tank became like a snow globe.  I am thinking that isn't normal.  Is that what your product is supposed to look like?  If not, what do you recommend?

Asked by: Matt4475
Did you shake it thoroughly prior to dosing? It does cloud the water, but this should last only a few moments. Call 1-800-526-0650 if you need more help. BREX

Is safestart mainly autotrophic bacteria solution? Can it used to overcome bacterial bloom in aquarium?

Asked by: Brose
Thanks for asking! SafeStart is not autotrophic. It can help with bacterial blooms cause by an influx in organics in the water, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. We hope this answers your question! For more help call Tetra at 1-800-526-0650. We are happy to help!
