SafeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums.

afeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums. The live bacteria start working immediately to provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish without the long wait. SafeStart Plus can also be used after a water change, when adding fish or after medicating.

How SafeStart Plus works: New filters are sterile and take 30 to 40 days for bacteria to naturally form. With SafeStart Plus, all of the beneficial bacteria are seeded from the beginning, for instant, safe results.

Why SafeStart Plus is better:

  • Our patented filter bacteria are proven superior.
  • We grow the actual aquatic bacteria that are naturally found in aquariums. We do not use low cost industrial bacteria from terrestrial strains.
  • Our concentrated formula adds a full filter bed of bacteria with just one dose.
  • Live nitrifying bacteria start working immediately to reduce dangerous ammonia and nitrite.
  • Prevents new tank syndrome for healthy fish.
  • The patented mix of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, and Nitrospira is proven to work.
  • Shelf-stable formula requires no refrigeration for added convenience.

This product comes in the following sizes: 1.69 fl oz, 3.38 fl oz, 8.45 fl oz

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves Time, NO Die-Offs with new tanks I used Tetra Safe Start Plus in my brand new 54 gallon freshwater tank, in conjunction with a cannister filter system. I followed the labe and did introduce freshwater tropical fish within the first 24 hours, understanding that without fish, the bacteria in safestart wouldn't have anything to feed on.The results were spectacular, we tested the water each and every day and none of the harmful spikes in chemistry happened as they often do with newly populated aquarium environments.I'm writing this review a year later and could not be more impressed with the results. We're in the process of establishing a 100 gallon environment next and will use Safestart Plus again and I have no reason to think we'll have any problems at all.Thank you for this excellent source of bottled beneficial bacteria, I would recommend it without reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safestart Plus is perfect Safestart Plus is perfect. My Aquarium cycled in 6 days!I started a new 55 gallon tank & added a 8.45oz (250cc) bottle Safestart Plus and the fish. The ammonia never went over 0.5. Ammonia is currently = zero, Nitrites = zero, Nitrates = 20. Fish are very happy.Bottom line - I will NEVER start a tank without using Tetra Safestart Plus! I will also add small dose of Safestart when I change bio-media.ONLY ISSUE - the directions on the bottle are vague. Note – if you add Safestart Plus at the same time as the dechlorinator (Tetra AquaSafe) – the dechlorinator will kill all the beneficial bacteria in Safestart. So WAIT 24hrs after dechlorinator to use Safestart Plus

Can SafeStart be used in a tank with fish? Will it kill the fish?

Asked by: Toadie
Of course! And no, definitely not. SafeStart is the natural bacteria that develops in all aquatic systems and is necessary for keeping them healthy and balanced. This includes lakes, rivers, ponds, etc., not just home aquariums. You can add it directly to the tank, at any time. BREX

I purchased an 8.45 oz bottle of safe start plus. Do I use the entire bottle for 10 gal tank?

Asked by: Angels Elliot
Certainly not as that can treat a 75 gallon tank! Just use about 2 tablespoons for your 10 gallon tank. BREX

My ammonia is 0.25ppm, nitrates between 10 and 20. Have done a 30% water change each week for 3 weeks. These numbers don't go up, but don't go down either. Are these safe numbers or should I add more TSS. I add a capful after water changes.

Asked by: Sue40
When do you test the water? .25 could easily be a false positive, especially if the test is right after a water change. Are you vacuuming the gravel? Nitrates develop because of organic matter that forms in the gravel, and filter system. Have you tested the tap water to compare? Tap water can actually cause these issues as well. TSS can be added at any time and is always beneficial. It will help with ammonia and nitrite, but not nitrates. Live plants can help with nitrates as well as vacuuming the gravel and maintaining the entire filter system. BREX

Hello, I'm using TSS in a 90L tank with 4 danios, I'm on day 9 and my ammonia has been decreasing but my nitrite has gone to 2.0 and hasn't moved, but my nitrates are going up though? Is this what happens with tss or shall I water change and start over?

Asked by: Taylor0601
This is normal, and the nitrites should start coming down soon, while nitrates go up. Give it another day or two. BREX

I am not using a filter for the new tank i got because i am treating my fish for tail rot, should i still use safe start, or should i wait until i put the filter in to use it

Asked by: HannahDaltonHarris
We would recommend you wait until the fish are well and there is a filter. The medication may harm the bacteria, and the bacteria need that oxygen. BREX

I’m on day 8 with my new 5.5 gallon tank (and I used SS Plus). The tank is cloudy. Is this normal or should I do a partial water change (like 1 gallon)?

Asked by: AprilFR
It can be, it just depends on what is causing it. If you are overfeeding for example, then even TSS + won't help you completely. Also, if you added more than a couple of fish it will probably cloud up since 2-3 very small fish is all it can hold, period. We would recommend testing the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. If either of the first two are high, but nitrate is also registering, it is cycling properly. If either are extremely high ( more than 2 ppm) then do the 1 gallon water change, and add aquarium salt (assuming you have fish that are okay with salt). BREX

Hello, I just purchased a bottle of Tetra SafeStart Plus.I just set up a brand new tank that is 5.5 gallons.Do I pour the whole bottle for this small size tank? The bottle states  it will treat up to 40 gallons. What's the time frame to add Betta fish?

Asked by: Jay Gee
Buy the betta fish, bring him straight home, and let him float in his bag for about 15 minutes. Slowly add a little bit of the tank water to his bag every couple of minutes. While he is floating, dose the TSS Plus. You only need at most 1/4 of the bottle. Cap it tightly and store it in cool, dry area. No extreme temps like in a garage or outbuilding. Keep the remainder to use after water changes etc. BREX

Sorry another question! I shook the bottle pretty hard before I dumped it into the tank, but there are hundreds of bacteria clumps so my tank looks like a snow globe. What should I do?

Asked by: campokrifcak
Great question! The snow globe effect will go away as the bacteria settles. For more help contact Tetra at 1-800-526-0650. We are happy to help!
