SafeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums.

afeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums. The live bacteria start working immediately to provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish without the long wait. SafeStart Plus can also be used after a water change, when adding fish or after medicating.

How SafeStart Plus works: New filters are sterile and take 30 to 40 days for bacteria to naturally form. With SafeStart Plus, all of the beneficial bacteria are seeded from the beginning, for instant, safe results.

Why SafeStart Plus is better:

  • Our patented filter bacteria are proven superior.
  • We grow the actual aquatic bacteria that are naturally found in aquariums. We do not use low cost industrial bacteria from terrestrial strains.
  • Our concentrated formula adds a full filter bed of bacteria with just one dose.
  • Live nitrifying bacteria start working immediately to reduce dangerous ammonia and nitrite.
  • Prevents new tank syndrome for healthy fish.
  • The patented mix of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, and Nitrospira is proven to work.
  • Shelf-stable formula requires no refrigeration for added convenience.

This product comes in the following sizes: 1.69 fl oz, 3.38 fl oz, 8.45 fl oz

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves Time, NO Die-Offs with new tanks I used Tetra Safe Start Plus in my brand new 54 gallon freshwater tank, in conjunction with a cannister filter system. I followed the labe and did introduce freshwater tropical fish within the first 24 hours, understanding that without fish, the bacteria in safestart wouldn't have anything to feed on.The results were spectacular, we tested the water each and every day and none of the harmful spikes in chemistry happened as they often do with newly populated aquarium environments.I'm writing this review a year later and could not be more impressed with the results. We're in the process of establishing a 100 gallon environment next and will use Safestart Plus again and I have no reason to think we'll have any problems at all.Thank you for this excellent source of bottled beneficial bacteria, I would recommend it without reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I used SafeStart on my aquarium started 10/22/17 My three Tetras are doing fine chasing each other around my ten gallon tank. Benificial bacteria and removal of chloring and ammonia are a must. I feel safe using Tetra's products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safestart Plus is perfect Safestart Plus is perfect. My Aquarium cycled in 6 days!I started a new 55 gallon tank & added a 8.45oz (250cc) bottle Safestart Plus and the fish. The ammonia never went over 0.5. Ammonia is currently = zero, Nitrites = zero, Nitrates = 20. Fish are very happy.Bottom line - I will NEVER start a tank without using Tetra Safestart Plus! I will also add small dose of Safestart when I change bio-media.ONLY ISSUE - the directions on the bottle are vague. Note – if you add Safestart Plus at the same time as the dechlorinator (Tetra AquaSafe) – the dechlorinator will kill all the beneficial bacteria in Safestart. So WAIT 24hrs after dechlorinator to use Safestart Plus

I'm a fish tank newbie and I got it all wrong. I have a 20 gallon tank and I added the conditioner for the water. just found out about cycling. Ammonia is high, want to add safe start but how do I bring down ammonia first? I have correct ph and easy balan

Asked by: Mina2792
Do small partial water changes of around 4 gallons. Once the ammonia level is 2 or 3 ppm or less, you can then add the SafeStart Plus. Do not feed much food if at all. One flake per fish, once daily. BREX

How much safe start is required for a 3 gallon tank?

Asked by: Maryk
We don't do a dosage per se. If you have the smallest container, use approximately 1/4 of the bottle at most. This is not a chemical, but a naturally cultured bacteria so overdosing is not an issue. BREX

Great question! Yes, you can absolutely add this to a tank with fish in it. It is a good thing to add some after every water change. For more help contact Tetra at PetSupport@spectrumbrands.com. We are happy to help!

Would multiple full  applications be a bad thing?  I won’t got into an exhaustive explanation, but I essentially have two noncylcled canister filters on a fully stocked and planted goldfish tank.

Asked by: Jamie Lewis
No, not at all. You can't really overdose this product. Just be sure to put a few days in between each application so there is always enough food for the bacteria. BREX

I got a 1.5 gallon tank how much safe start * not plus* do I add for 3 glo fish... and how long do I wait to add my fish

Asked by: Jlissa
You don't want to add three fish at once. You would add one fish at the same time you add the SafeStart to the tank. While the fish is floating in its bag, mix a little bit of your water in the bag every couple of minutes for about 10 minutes. Put the SafeStart in the tank while you are doing this. There is no dosage such as x amount per gallon since this is just bacteria. Since it is such a small tank though, we'd recommend about two teaspoons, just so you don't use more than you really need. Cap it tightly and use as necessary. BREX

Can I use TSS after dechlorinating water with Prime? (There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice on the web re: this topic.)

Asked by: MKEplaty
We do not recommend using it immediately after using Prime, no. You can use it with AquaSafe Plus, but with any other manufacturer's product, we recommend waiting at least 12-24 hours. We have not had the opportunity to research other company's products effects on this product. BREX

Should I turn off my UV sterilizer when I add Safe Start? If so, how long should it stay off? I don't want to kill the bacteria I just added.

Asked by: G119
Yes, we would definitely recommend turning that off. How long is another matter, entirely, as the UV sterilizer will always kill any bacteria in the tank. Assuming you are adding the bacteria because you are having an issue, we would recommend waiting at least until the issue is resolved. Otherwise, a minimum of 1-2 weeks. BREX

I added TSS to my 5G tank (1 betta) 10 days ago and did nothing else (no chemicals, no water changes) My ammonia is 0 but nitrites are very very high (2-5ppm) with some nitrates (10-20ppm). My fish looks sick. Can I add prime to detox? Advice?

Asked by: AmyH
Thanks for asking! We suggest doing a 25% water change and adding more TSS. Repeat the water whenever the nitrite is high. Nitrite is can be caused by the break down of organic materials like fish food. So also consider limiting the amount of food the Betta gets or limiting feeding to once a day. We hope this helps!
