SafeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums.

afeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums. The live bacteria start working immediately to provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish without the long wait. SafeStart Plus can also be used after a water change, when adding fish or after medicating.

How SafeStart Plus works: New filters are sterile and take 30 to 40 days for bacteria to naturally form. With SafeStart Plus, all of the beneficial bacteria are seeded from the beginning, for instant, safe results.

Why SafeStart Plus is better:

  • Our patented filter bacteria are proven superior.
  • We grow the actual aquatic bacteria that are naturally found in aquariums. We do not use low cost industrial bacteria from terrestrial strains.
  • Our concentrated formula adds a full filter bed of bacteria with just one dose.
  • Live nitrifying bacteria start working immediately to reduce dangerous ammonia and nitrite.
  • Prevents new tank syndrome for healthy fish.
  • The patented mix of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, and Nitrospira is proven to work.
  • Shelf-stable formula requires no refrigeration for added convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for jump starting a new tank!! I have been using this stuff for a couple of years now in multiple tanks and have had excellent results every time!! Anyone that says is doesn't work has either done something wrong by not following the specifics. Possibly not had the proper tank size for the fish they had to start with (I see this in most cases where it fails to work, never trust what pet stores tell you always research the fish you want ahead of time for an honest answer on fish tank requirements) or possibly got an expired bottle that was dead. I have never had any issues at all using this product nor have I ever even had a mini-cycle happen shortly after. It is very important to make sure you are not overstocked or even fully stocked as you are not supposed to do any water changes for 2 weeks. I understocked by about half everytime and after 2 weeks and a partial water change slowly added more stock over the next couple of months. I have very sensitive fish so it took a while to fully stock. Definitely recommend this product if used correctly!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did NOT Work I purchased this stuff a little over a week ago for an emergency hospital tank setup. I poured at first the recommended dosage for a "new" tank as well as a handful of media from an established tank in to a 10 gal aquarium. Believing in the product as I read good reviews on it, I put my beat up 6" VC10 into the hospital tank to heal up. A few days later I noticed him breathing heavy and lethargic. I checked water and found amonia in it. I then poured double the suggested dose of the TSS to curve the amonia. Tested the water a couple hours later and found no changes. Took my $100 fish out and placed him back in the main tank. Over a week later (today) the amonia has only gone up which is obviously the beginning of the cycle. No nitrites or nitrates yet. Amonia reading at 4ppm. Do not use this product with fish in the tank. There is a chance I received a bad bottle but really no way to tell. Any how it didn't work for me and almost cost me a very expensive fish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves Time, NO Die-Offs with new tanks I used Tetra Safe Start Plus in my brand new 54 gallon freshwater tank, in conjunction with a cannister filter system. I followed the labe and did introduce freshwater tropical fish within the first 24 hours, understanding that without fish, the bacteria in safestart wouldn't have anything to feed on.The results were spectacular, we tested the water each and every day and none of the harmful spikes in chemistry happened as they often do with newly populated aquarium environments.I'm writing this review a year later and could not be more impressed with the results. We're in the process of establishing a 100 gallon environment next and will use Safestart Plus again and I have no reason to think we'll have any problems at all.Thank you for this excellent source of bottled beneficial bacteria, I would recommend it without reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I used SafeStart on my aquarium started 10/22/17 My three Tetras are doing fine chasing each other around my ten gallon tank. Benificial bacteria and removal of chloring and ammonia are a must. I feel safe using Tetra's products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safestart Plus is perfect Safestart Plus is perfect. My Aquarium cycled in 6 days!I started a new 55 gallon tank & added a 8.45oz (250cc) bottle Safestart Plus and the fish. The ammonia never went over 0.5. Ammonia is currently = zero, Nitrites = zero, Nitrates = 20. Fish are very happy.Bottom line - I will NEVER start a tank without using Tetra Safestart Plus! I will also add small dose of Safestart when I change bio-media.ONLY ISSUE - the directions on the bottle are vague. Note – if you add Safestart Plus at the same time as the dechlorinator (Tetra AquaSafe) – the dechlorinator will kill all the beneficial bacteria in Safestart. So WAIT 24hrs after dechlorinator to use Safestart Plus

Asked by: Minnow
Hi Minnow, That's a lot of fish for a 1.5 gallon tank. Use at least one teaspoon. BREX

Hi, 75 gallon tank, dded ammonium nitrate NH4 to try to get a food source for bacteria up. It tested high, 6 or so on the API test. Then I added TSS three days ago. Still testing high. No fish in the tank ever. but some plants. ok? water change? redose?

Asked by: ojlover
Good question! SafeStart Plus should be used to prevent toxic levels of ammonia and nitrite when cycling a tank with fish. Levels that are toxic to fish are also toxic to the bacteria so adding the bacteria in when the levels are already high means the ammonia will kill off the bacteria. You want the level to be no more than 2.0 to prevent a major die off of the bacteria. Some bacteria will survive at 6 ppm but not enough to quickly reduce the levels. I personally am not a proponent of fishless cycling. If fish are added at a proper rate, along with the SafeStart Plus, they won't experience any spikes in ammonia or nitrite. At this point, I would say either wait it out or do a partial water change to bring the levels down, and re-dose with TSS Plus. Keep in mind, you have to add fish at some point and the bacteria will starve off quickly once levels reach 0. BREX

Whats the difference between safe start and safe start plus which should i use

Asked by: Lurch0
Safe Start is a less concentrated form the SafeStart Plus and recommended for maintenance of the biological filter in an established tank. SafeStart Plus can be used at any time, but is more concentrated so usually recommended for start up of a new tank or to aid in the regrowth of a damaged biological filter due to medication, too large of a water change, and so forth. How many drops of tetra safe start to you but in half a gallon?

Asked by: Belle24
Great question Belle24. This is not a chemical so there is no "dosage" per se. Half a gallon is very, very small though so one to two teaspoons should suffice to boost your biological filter. Make sure there is a fish in the tank, and the water has been conditioned first. BREX

I just set up a brand new 10g tank. I used an entire 3.5oz ish bottle of Safe start, is that ok because the bottle said to use the entire thing up to 20g? If not what should I do? Also do I need to use a water conditioner for chlorine & such?

Asked by: TNHelsel
The water conditioner should definitely be used, and you typically add it first, as chlorine and chloramines along with heavy metals can also kill the beneficial bacteria. The entire bottle is fine, but you want the tank de-chlorinated first, and at least one fish in the tank to help "feed" the bacteria with fish waste. BREX

I'm a fish tank newbie and I got it all wrong. I have a 20 gallon tank and I added the conditioner for the water. just found out about cycling. Ammonia is high, want to add safe start but how do I bring down ammonia first? I have correct ph and easy balan

Asked by: Mina2792
Do small partial water changes of around 4 gallons. Once the ammonia level is 2 or 3 ppm or less, you can then add the SafeStart Plus. Do not feed much food if at all. One flake per fish, once daily. BREX

How much safe start is required for a 3 gallon tank?

Asked by: Maryk
We don't do a dosage per se. If you have the smallest container, use approximately 1/4 of the bottle at most. This is not a chemical, but a naturally cultured bacteria so overdosing is not an issue. BREX
