Q. Off & on, all summer long my pond gets clear, then turns pea green with about two to three weeks in between each phase. I have been told that it's from too high a ph level but it runs about 7.0. Someone else told me that it's from not enough pond plants (my Koi destroyed the ones that were in the pond), so I added more. I thought the plant problem was doing some good because it cleared up shortly after that, but sure enough, two weeks later, it got green again. At the present, it's clear. The fish don't seem to mind it going back and forth, so I guess it bothers me more than it does them. Any ideas?
A. Your ph is fine. I would make sure your filtration is doing a good job of converting fish waste and decaying plant matter, which feeds algae. Get a test kit and check your nitrate level. Also, sunlight will help grow microscopic algae, which passes right through your filter causing what is known as "green water," a very common problem. Go to TetraPond.com and check the FAQs on green water for more information. The best remedy for green water is to purchase a UV clarifier, which will destroy single-cell algae and help clear up your water. Also, make sure your pond bottom doesn't have a build-up of debris, which will also aid in algae growth.
