Q. I am thinking of buying a UV clarifier and noticed that there are two kinds. I don't want to make a mistake and buy based on price only. Can you help me know how to choose? We get a lot of algae on our rocks and we have a waterfall that just gets covered with algae.
A. Algae is quite common in ponds and both sun and nutrients in the water contribute to its growth. Remove as much of the string algae by hand or with a blast from the garden hose, and then scoop it out of the pond. Then use a treatment product to control algae; it should take care of the rest of your string algae. However, it will not get rid of the microscopic algae which passed through your filter causing the water to turn green. This is where the UV clarifier comes in. UV clarifiers combat green water by exposing suspended single-celled algae to very high levels of ultra violet light, which destroys its reproductive ability. Go to TetraPond.com and check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for more information on green water and UV clarifiers.
