OCTOBER customer questions:

Q. My Koi and goldfish eat and destroy any plants I put in the pond including: water lilies, water lettuce and water hyacinth. Is it a dietary problem?

A. This is not an uncommon issue when keeping Koi. Koi by nature are very active. They like to root and dig at potted plants in the pond, nibble at floating plants roots, etc. There are two things you can do. First, keep them fed and content, especially in the summer. Feed them several times a day with only as much as they can consume in several minutes. Feed them enough, but don't overfeed. Second, try purchasing a brightly colored rubber floating toy; some Koi like to bat that around for fun. You can also try hardier potted plants such as iris, lotus, canna lilies and others in weighted containers. They are also beautiful, and hold up better against Koi abuse than floaters do.
