SEPTEMBER 2009 Fish Tale Winner
Thank you, Elaine of Indiana, for sharing this Fish Tale with us:

I had been taking care of our growing pond and growing fish for about eight years. Our family has enjoyed watching baby goldfish and Koi grow from season to season, every year having new "additions" to our pond family. In late 2007, while I was recovering from major back surgery, my husband decided to tackle the job of winterizing the pond. He assured me that all was well.

When the ice started melting quickly one early spring day, I was mortified to see most of our fish were dead and only a couple seemed to be gasping for air through the melted ice. My husband dutifully netted out the approximately 50 dead fish, including a gorgeous blue and white Koi that had grown to about 13 inches in a mere two seasons! It wasn't until several days later that my husband finally admitted last winter he had "dumped" chemicals into the pond without measuring and then unplugged the pump. This was late in the season and the pond had frozen over within a few days. Without the benefit of a few days of circulation followed by ice formation on top of too many chemicals, our poor fish family suffocated!

Only two goldfish survived the ordeal, but last summer they were joined by a few colorful new Koi that my husband apologetically added to our pond...along with the promise that he will never touch the pond chemicals again!
