Aquariums are fun, relaxing, rewarding, therapeutic and educational. As manufacturers and fishkeepers ourselves, we take great pride in making top quality products while helping educate our fellow fishkeepers to ensure they are successful, and their fish are healthy and happy. The general rule for tank size is one inch of fish per gallon. However other factors should be considered, such as:
  • How large will the fish be as an adult?
  • Is it species that is active and needs larger space? Or is it a solitary fish?
  • Is it a schooling fish that needs to be in groups of five or more?
  • Is it a fish that produces a lot of waste?
  • Is it a species that is aggressive, does best with others of the same species type, or is it a more peaceful type that would be a good fit in a community tank?
Small aquariums are a great way to get started in the freshwater hobby, and with any new hobby involving living creatures, it is always best to learn as much as you can. And when buying fish, ask your retailer for guidance in choosing the right fish for your size aquarium.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Two 10 gallon tank kits We bought two of these 10 gallon tank kits. Having never owned any fish except a betta before, we followed all instructions from PetCo sales person and the enclosed instructions to the letter. We haven't had any issues with leaks - I think either you have a tank fully sealed, or you don't. The kit came with everything except a fish scooper (net), extension tubes for the filter, gravel, fish and any plant/decorations you want for the tank. We set it up in this order: Tank poster on back of tank, washed gravel, thermometer, heater, lid #with light#, filter, add water with 5ml de-chlorinator. We let the water sit about 24 hours till the heater had warmed up the tank. Then we added plants #live# and decorations. And finally the fish. This would have been 5 stars except for the fact that one of the 2 attachments that attach the lid to the tank broke during install - very flimsy so be gentle. Also, the tank is called tetra tank #which are tiny fish#, but there is no extension tube packed in with, so the filter tube doesn't reach to the bottom of the tank. We only learnt this was important with tiny danois fish because one got stuck up the tube and perished. Tips for first timer: If you're putting a background poster on the back of the tank - do this before installing filter. Put the temperature strip before filling tank with water. In case you miss the sticker at the bottom of the tank - the top of the tank with the side with "notches" on the corners is the BACK side where the lid hinges. When you get the fish, put the plastic bag with fish as is, floating on the top of the tank for about 20 minutes. The temp in bag will equalize with that of tank. Then don't pour out the fish and water, but instead scoop out the fish and put into water. Fill filter chamber with tank water before turning on filter. The kit has coupon for buying fish at a discount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great little tank... I got the 10 gallon tank for X-mas. It was very easy to set up and is really relatively quiet. Of course in a quiet room you can definately hear the filter operating, but it is easily drowned out by other sounds like music, TV, etc. I got the model with the tiny LED lights which I find mildly disappointing. There are pro's to the lights, as they are very low profile and make for a compact, streamlined looking tank and perhaps they are more energy efficient. But with the placement of the 3 small banks of lights my tank seems kind of shadow-y and dim, which is not helped by my choice of dark colored gravel and background. I think more lights (like 5-6 banks) may be helpful for future models. All-in-all, its a great little tank for the price and very easy to maintain.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from moderately impressed. i have bought the 10 gallon starter kit. im pretty impressed but i think there are a few things that could be improved . first.) i think you should get at least 2 filters to change. 2.) i think that we could use a trial size bottel (mabye a 1 ounce bottel) of water conditioner. but besides that im very impressed with my aquarium.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from leaky filter i bought my tetra size 29 aquarium kit less that 2 weeks ago. the tank is great and seems to be holding up, but the filter has since stopped actually filtering the water, but instead sucks the water up and then it falls right out where the tube connects to the filter itself. i am highly dissapointed in how poorly this filter worked.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from leaky aquarium tank i bought the aquarium from a retailer and not even 24 hours later after got everything out, i set the tank on a stand , & i filled the aquarium with water and added gravel and now the tank has a leak in it and the water has gone off of the aquarium stand onto my floor in a puddle.. as it is leaking from the bottom somewhere.. i am not satisified with it now and would not recommend it to anyone if they had to deal with this one issue especially those who has a carpet floors.. it is a new tank one right out of the box and this is the first time i ever had such a leak problem right off the bat with the tank kit..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 55 Gal Tetra Boxed and Ready to Go I purchased the 55 gal Tetra Boxed Aquarium when I was setting up my Fresh water tank 6 months ago. The kit contained every single thing I needed to set up my new tank. I gained some assistance from my LFS with a type of bacteria to help me get my tank going. I have been going strong now for 6 months. I have only had to purchase additional filters for the water filter. It's a nice addition to my living room and keeps the little ones entertained for hours. It truly is EVERYTHING you need to set up your aquarium. Just add FISH!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This pruduct seems weekly built I purchased a 10 gallon tank. I set it up and 6 hours later it had all leaked out all over the place. One place it leaked was about half way up one corner, and the other was along the bottom. I would so far not recomend this for anyone. And if you do get one set it up in your bathtub for 48 hours at least.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is not worth the hassle. I have purchased 2 10 gallon kits over the last 2 weeks. Both have leaked. The first one within an hour of setting it up. The second one started leaking the next day. What a horrible mess. I am returning both to the store of purchase. I still need an aquarium so I am going to look for a different brand. It looks like quality control failed at the place of mfg. I am disappointed because it looked so nice when set up!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaking I have owned my kit for 3 years now and with in the first week it leaked all over my desk in my dorm room. Since then I have always had to keep a towel under it. Lately I have hardly been able to keep water in it because of how badly it has been leaking. I would NEVER recommend this product to anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Aquarium. I have a 55 gallon and two 29 gallons. I wish that they would use black silicone. I didn't use the filters, I'm not crazy about the media.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from TETRA 20 Aquarium Kit (Premium Glass Aquarium) [Model 50002 20g] Almost Complete for Tropical Fish Santa left this kit for my 6 year old daughter. The Whisper 20 Filter,Canopy Cover with Florescent Tube Light, Exterior (stick on)Thermometer, Heater, Fish net, Aquasafe water conditioner, a small pack of Tetra Min fish food. I had a 20 gal aquarium in the 60's and early 70's and knew the kit came up a little short and picked up an air pump and air stone along with plastic tubing and valve unit. I had gravel from a borrowed tank a couple of years ago when we had Gold Fish. I was pleased with the quality of the tank and hardware other than the heater keeps the tank beween 76 & 78 degrees f. and it can't be adjusted and the length of the pickup for the Whisper 20 filter needs at least a 6" extension. I inquired at the Globle Pet Shop and was advised they don't stock parts and that I'd have to check on line. I checked at Petsmart and got the very same response. I'm a little concerned that that both retailers want to sell the kit but once it's out the door their not interested. Tank set up 29 Dec 2011, happy so far. Trying to hold off the 6 year old as all but one of 6 original fish died in the first few days after purchase on 30th Dec 2011 Thank goodness for Petsmart 14 day fish guarantee. Trying to reduce the Nitrite and Nitrate numbers before more fish. The Mickey Mouse Sword Tail obviously hardiest of 3 Guppies, one Red Wag Platy, and a Dalmation Liar Tail Molly. I'd recommend this kit with the comment that the filter needs a pickup expension, the heater can't be adjusted and the kit needs an air pump, tubing, and air stone to be complete
