Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very loud I set up the filter , straight out of the box , filled with water like you're suppose to . The water is flowing but it's so loud . None of my other filters ever did this .

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not quiet at all I just bought this filter and it's LOUD. There's nothing clogging the intake and the paddle is free moving but it sounds like the motor is struggling.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stopped working Like most of the other reviews, my filter stopped working also. I cleaned the impeller multiple times, it has quit again and I am giving up. The 2 piece gasketed intake tube is precarious and if you don't put it on just right, you will end up with a fountain in your living room. This is NOT a quiet filter. I have a 30 year old Topfin 40 that is still running perfectly. I don't understand why they changed to this design. The newer Topfins are too narrow to fit over the back of my tank, or I'd have another in a heartbeat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too Noisy I just installed the Tetra-Whisper EX 45 filter last night. Very disappointed at the amount of noise it makes! This is a replacement for an older Whisper in which the fins on the motor propeller slowly kept breaking off. I am thinking of returning to the store and trying a different make/model all together. Brand new right out of the box noisy, no sand or live plants, as some of the other responses from Tetra indicate may be the cause.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed: Poor quality. I've owned an aquarium for over 30 years and decided to try the top filtration systems instead of under gravel systems to allow for better plant growth. I ran the EX70 for about 3-4 months when it simply stopped running. I did regular filter changes, maintained proper water levels, and regularly cleaned out the intake/propeller of algae and debris. It did great while it ran but it should last longer than 3-4 months. Poor quality.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bummed, died in 3 weeks...if that I bought my new double whisper 2-3 weeks ago and noticed no flow, checked my cord, pulled it out, cleaned it all, put it back in and still nothing. Took the motor off and plugged JUST that in, nothing...ziltch...dead... It worked great, when it was working. I don't understand why there are so many issues lately with Tetra products, are they making things cheaper? I really can't afford to go buy another double filter again. I'm so mad right now. 3 DANG WEEKS?!?!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the best I will be specific. I got my new aquarium and got recommended by the guy at the pet store on purchasing this model EX20. A couple weeks after I started reviewing comments all over the web about the filter I purchased and found this web site. Read about the "3 month" experience, of course I thought "that will not be my case"... lucky guy. It's been 4 months since I purchased the filter and there is nothing more to do. It's not working anymore, tried everything I read about trying to make it work again. 2 stars because It worked ok during these past months... but really? Not even 1 year? Need to improve your product team.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Filter - Whisper? Not! Brand new Whisper PF-10 started rattling after just a few hours. Pump is clean, clear and seated but it rattles. No obstructions or air bubbles. Just touching the intake tube with your finger stops the rattle. The rattle is vibration of the intake tube elbow where it touches the U shaped notch in the water dam of the filter case. I've wrapped the tube with thin foam just below the elbow where it passes the cutout in the filter case. The foam wedges between the intake tube and the filter case stopping the rattle and returning it to a whisper pump. You should consider providing a foam pad to wrap the tube at this point or make the water dam cutout smaller so the tube fits snug eliminating vibration rattle. Filtration and flow is great.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from WEx20 only worked maybe 3 months Really liked the product but it failed only 3 months into using it. The water level was correct and I had changed out the filters regularly. I'm not sure why it failed but it did. Just was not working one day.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works..... Kinda. On my second whisper filter in 8 months. The first on lasted about 3 months then just stopped. My latest one has almost completely lost its flow. I've taken it apart and clean it twice and still no change. One the plus side it's really easy to tear down, clean and reassemble.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Must be Lucky...or follow directions I've had tanks online for 25 years and Whisper on most. I don't remember ever having a part fail. I just dug out a Whisper C I've had for a long time for a recent tank just put back in action. Luckily filters are still available but more important, pictures and parts. The lift tube could not be seated without locking up the impeller. Almost ready to toss but found a tube/impeller kit on here. Comparing the picture to mine, I realized I had the wrong impeller installed with too long fins. Must've done that when shutting down systems in the past. I snipped off the tops of the fins and Whisper C is running like a champ. Since it'll be around, I did order that kit though. I liked the older clear box filters better but thanks Tetra! Only 4 filters online now but my interest ebbs and wanes over the years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst filter I bought the filter 8 months ago and the motor swelled up and caused the impeller to lock in place. The heat swelled it up so bad I can not remove the impeller at all I had to run out and buy a brand new filtration system right away

Rated 1 out of 5 by from noisy, noisy, noisy i bought the xf30 a month ago and i wasted $$ and about 3 hours of my life so far. the impeller on this beast rattles and hums within twelve hours of a thorough disassembly and check for obstruction. i firmly believe it s out of round and the customer service rep after normal business hours seems to agree with me, but offers no solution. i registered the product when i bought it but was told that only is for them to contact me if there is a product recall. my small aquarium has no sand or live plants and appears perfectly able to spin freely but rattles like an old car after being plugged in a few hours

Rated 1 out of 5 by from shouting not whispering had to replace an older whisper 30 with this new style .It filters fine but is way too noisy to tolerate and the intake tube barely stays on . They should of left good enough alone, this new model is awful

Rated 2 out of 5 by from noisy but excellent in filtering i have my tv and hood in my kitchen on but still you can hear the grinding noise from the motor.. its not whisper at all.. but i love the idea of the scrubber i think that is better than the biowheel from the other product which in my experience stops moving after 1 week of use.. if you dont mind noise buy this product but if you do mind find something else..

Rated 3 out of 5 by from whisper ex70 I bought this power filter about 4 months ago and I really like that it is very very quiet. It is adjacent to my computer room and phone and the other unit was so noisy that it was difficult to carry on a phone conversation because of the noise. While i like it very much the first one died on me and I just got it replaced with another Whisper ex 70. I still bought the same one but i wish the first one would have lasted longer. I would rate it excellent and the best if i didn't have my first one just die on my after 4 months. I just may be a inadvertent problem with that first unit

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shouting not whispering I loved my Whisper 70. Easy to use, easy to change filters and SUPER quiet. That super quiet feature was what really won me over since my tank is in my living room. After a time, the filter started making some noise and I bought the necessary part from the manufacturer and fixed it. Happy again but, again, after a time it started making an unpleasant and loud noise. This time, even though the filter was still working, I ordered two new ones. I just thought I'd already gotten my money's worth. This time, however, the noise started after only a week. Now it's really loud and I'm super unhappy. All aquarium filters filter but I bought this one because it purported to be quiet. It's not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product works great When i first put the ex70 on my tank the water was horribly dirty but within hours of running the water was crystal clear

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Seems to keep water fairly clean but VERY loud I've had this filter- Tetra Whisper EX 20 for less than 3 months. I've been having intermittent issues where the pump is VERY loud. Make a loud vibrating/humming noise. When it wasn't doing that, it was a great filter. Now it's loud, annoying and irritating! I've attempted to clean it, nothing helps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good i Have the EX 70 and EX 30 and they are both Very good, nice and quiet! Cartridge changes are made easy with the little door on the lid for the EX 70. The EX 30 is GREAT for my aquarium, the noise is minimal and the water flow is good! same with the EX 70, very good water flow, my water is crystal clear and all water parameters are EXCELLENT! I love the TETRA brand, and if i have a questtion, Tetra always responds in a matter of time, and one time i needed a replacement, and they sent it to me within 3 days and it was PERFECT!! THANK YOU TETRA FOR SUCH A AMAZING PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a long term solution Bought the Whisper EX45 as a primary filter and water agitator for a 40 gallon tank that I use to overwinter my KOI. The filter motor seized and is not repairable. I only use my tank for 3-5 months of the year so I expected years of performance. Very disappointed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Keeps water clean, but.... I have the Tetra Whisper PF10 (which I can't seem to find on their website). I've only had it about a month, but I'm not happy with it. The output is much too strong for a 10 gallon tank. The fish can't swim anywhere near it. Also, the output lip or whatever it's called sits way too far into the tank. When the tank is full of water to the proper level, the output part of the filter actually sits quite a ways under the water. In order for it not to be under water, I'd have to take an inch or inch and a half of water out of the tank. Disappointed with the product, will likely take it back.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great start to design, bad finish. The outflow is great. The silent operation is the best for a hob filter. I like that the impeller casing is inside the tank. The problems come with the filter cartidges. Decent start to their design with the refillable plastic cartridge. On the ex20 the cartridge shape is curved on the bottom not sure like the filter body. The pad which is inserted into the cartridge is not big enough to fill the cartridge space. The bio filter cartridge is not much better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very loud for a small 10 gal I recently purchased the whisper for my new 10 gal tank. The first one I brought home was completely not working. I went back to the store and They luckily replaced it. I got home and have it working and you can hear it through my whole house! It is terrible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Filter System to buy for your Aquarium We just bought a second one, to have as a spare. We did have an issue with our first one, however it has a 3 mfg warranty, so I called them and they are send us the part we need to fix the problem. Our Aquarium looks so clean and clear it is beautiful. This is the Best Filter ever and with the best warranty. You can beat the price either.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT PURCHASE ANY TETRA FILTER! So today I came home to find that the gasket on the flitter has broke. Luckily I have a second filter running on the tank so I was able to unplug this one completely. Because the gasket broke, there was water spraying all over the room the fish tank is in. If I didn't catch what happened sooner, I could've had serious damage to the floors because they are wood. I would not recommend this to anybody because I have looked online since this happened to me and it seems as if this is a common thing to occur. I have ran different filters by other brands for several years without any problems and this happened after having the filter running for not even two weeks! This will be the last time I ever use a filter made by tetra. Even if they fix this problem on newer models of there filters, I have lost trust in this company's filters, and maybe the company as a whole! I hope this review helps you to stay away from this terrible filter!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loud with a poor design The filter is extremely loud and I suspect that it isn't working. Despite a frequent water and filter change, an odor exists. Parts fall off with the slightest bump (by the fish) and I have to "fish" them out constantly. I have to unplug at night just to silence it so that I can sleep. You can hear it through 2 closed doors and it's hard to hear the TV over this filtration system. I did receive a replacement however it was as loud as the original right out of the box. Although still under warranty, I am responsible for the return shipping. I don't know whether to return or just trash this product and cut my losses. On a bright note, all of the people in Customer Service are terrific.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor design My ex30 looked great when I first purchased it. After the first cleaning the frame work failed to hold the filter . Then I discovered replacement filters are twice as much as standard filters . After 3 months I had a power outage and the pump failed to restart . There is no way to access the Impaler to get running again . I'm done with tetra .
