Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loud with a poor design The filter is extremely loud and I suspect that it isn't working. Despite a frequent water and filter change, an odor exists. Parts fall off with the slightest bump (by the fish) and I have to "fish" them out constantly. I have to unplug at night just to silence it so that I can sleep. You can hear it through 2 closed doors and it's hard to hear the TV over this filtration system. I did receive a replacement however it was as loud as the original right out of the box. Although still under warranty, I am responsible for the return shipping. I don't know whether to return or just trash this product and cut my losses. On a bright note, all of the people in Customer Service are terrific.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor design My ex30 looked great when I first purchased it. After the first cleaning the frame work failed to hold the filter . Then I discovered replacement filters are twice as much as standard filters . After 3 months I had a power outage and the pump failed to restart . There is no way to access the Impaler to get running again . I'm done with tetra .

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very loud filter I purchased this filter from Petco, as soon as started it, it was very loud. I returned it and got another thinking it was just a defect, it is not the case. I called tech support and the lady said this was normal and that the sound will go away in a month. The water flow is great and I like the design, but the noise is too much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from effective - and so quiet! I barely know the filter is on; it lives up to its name. I've actually checked to see if it was on at times because it's that noiseless. I've had tanks for years, and this is by far the least noisy filter I've ever had. And the tank is crystal clear.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Tatra doen carry a critical part for the filter I purchased my tank with all the equipment from a private person. The 55 gal tank came with an EX70 filter that worked great and is also very quiet. Unfortunately, after several cleaning the bottom housing for the impeller started to break down and no longer snaps in place. I am having to use electric tape to hold it together and, due to imperfect seating, the filter is now very noisy. I contacted Tetra to purchase the housing and was told that it is not a part that they carry or can get. This is a critical part and is likely to break. Why is this not a replaceable part? My only option is to purchase a complete new filter. In my opinion this is not reasonable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great powered water filter, even better customer service! I bought one of these powered water filters, the whisper ex45, it didn't have the carbon cartridge carrier. I called the number on the box talked with a wonderful lady and in less then 5 minutes, hold time included, I was told that my needed part would be on at my place in about 7 to 10 days. AWESOME!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Bought the filter less than a month ago and it has already died. No longer turns on despite being plugged in. Would not recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter and customer service The first EX70 large filter I bought was quite loud. However, I really liked the simple design and set-up, and the ease of cleaning. So, instead of switching to another brand, I called Tetra and they said they would ship me a new filter, directly to my home, no charge whatsoever. Moreover, I was only on the phone for five minutes--no bouncing around between departments, having to repeat my story, or waiting on hold. The new filter arrived and worked quietly, as suggested by the name, "Whisper." I've had it running for over five years now and it is as quiet and efficient as ever. I cut some foam to fit the media wracks, not fussing with chemical or mechanical filtration. And the blue and white scrubbers are an added bonus. The water in the tank is crystal clear. I also like the slim profile of the filter, which allows the tank to be relatively close to the wall.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not work right !!!! bought this filter 3 months ago to replace on that has been working fine for about 5 years. I unplug it to feed my fish, after about a hour I plug it back in and it won' t start.I have to pull the filter out of the tank, jiggle the intake part and it starts up. I have to do this 2 times a day for a 3 month old pump, what a piece of junk and I paid 40 bucks for it at a local pet shop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Well, GREAT Customer Service The filter works well. Most filters are pretty much the same, but I like the extra insert (the blue thing) that allows beneficial bacteria to grow. What I liked most was the customer service. My filter was missing a piece, so I called to see if I could buy a replacement. Instead, I was on the phone for less than 5 minutes, and they sent me a replacement for free. It came very quickly! I was very impressed, and have never had such a positive customer service experience. Other companies should strive to this level of service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, but louder than expected I bought the Whisper EX 70 for my 55 gallon freshwater tank. It was very easy to set up, though I'm surprised that the impeller is in the tube, and a little dismayed that the cord gets so close to the water - the engineering doesn't seem well thought out. It's also quite a bit louder, mechanically, than my old MarineLand filter. The indicator strips are a farce - I've had the filter in place for about 2 weeks and it's already telling me to change the cartridge, which is unreasonable considering the cost of the odd-shaped replacement cartridges. But, the water in the tank is very clear. I like the special insert for facilitating healthy bacterial growth. The large filter and long tube ensure that the water circulates well through my tank. All in all, I give this a "good" rating, but it's not a perfect product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product had cheap features The part of the filtration system that sticks into the tank water that sucks the contents into the filter keeps falling off after 6 months of purchase of the product. I now have to keep reaching into the tank at least 2x a day to place the piece back onto the base of the filter.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Failure rate is a problem for me I am headed this morning to PETCO to find a replacement unit. this is the 3rd unit to fail in 2 years. This time I kept my receipt and I will not be looking at Tetra products

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So annoying!!! I have this filter for my 20 gallon tank. Every time I go through the cleaning process it literally is a horrible process. Whenever I clean the filter and try to start it up again it stalls like an old car that has no gas! I've tried leaving it to fix itself, adding water to help get it going, shakng, bumping and only after I scare my fish to death rattling and beating the side of it the filter, itdecides to begin running. Its not quiet what so ever! Whisper is hardly the term. It competes with the TV sound! Today while doing a routine water change the filter would not start for the life of me. Before the filter bag is even dirty, gunk builds up along the fall line and makes the water splash and fall unevenly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Pumping of water In less than 4 weeks of continuous working of the EX 30 and no fish yet in the tank, the filter has dropped its pumping capabilities considerably to a slow flow and very low air bubbles being formed. Since no fish in I cannot judge if its safe but I know the flow is not enough to help fish breathe. BTW, I bought the Tetra aquarium starter kit and the filter came in a plain white box, not the box shown in the website.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The product is cheaply made. I cannot comment on well it works because it broke right out of the box. The instructions did not list anything on how to attach the motor housing. Maybe it was because it should not have been detached in the first place. The clips holding it on where broke and the clip holding the power cord in place broke as well while I was attempting to clip the motor on. The filter housing for the cartridges seemed so flimsy I was confused as to how it actually held together. It seemed to tighten up when I put in the filter, but I would not trust in my tank. I'm highly disappointed with my purchase and will be returning it for an exchange of another filter brand. My Emperor filter has never let me down and I'll stick with it going forward.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Intake falls off I own two of the whispers, ex-45 and ex-20. 45's top tube is loose and the 20 the intake falls off and sucks up fish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Power Filter I have 1 EX70 and 3 EX45 filters. I don't understand why everybody says they are noisy. I have none of these issues. The pump is easy to get started there is no priming as long as you get the water level to the line marked on the pump. Filters the water great, all of my aquariums are crystal clear. I have removed the filter pad on 2 of these and added ceramic ring media in a bag with a sponge and some filter floss and this saves quite a bit of money. If the filter is noisy try adjusting the impeller maybe that will help. As far as I'm concerned these are outstanding power filters.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The Loudest I've heard in 30 yrs experience I and my family have had aquariums all my life. They are absolutely nothing new to me. Over the years I've gotten used to the brand Tetra as well as their Whisper products, so after about 5+ years from the last filter I debated much, but went with the EX70. It is the LOUDEST filter I have ever heard. I went through all of the trouble shooting and it is still unbelievable. Also The Tetra Timestrip feature, that I was excited to utilize does not come with the large filter packs, nor do any of the retailers near me in carry them. I do , however, think that the product is a great concept.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money This is not what I expect from a company like Tetra. The plastic tabs on the cover broke when I first assembled it. My old style Whisper lasted for years and was a much better design. The carbon insert's housing does not stay closed and are flimsy at best, not to mention replacement cartridges are WAY more expensive than the old style. The plastic is much thinner and can't understand how Tetra put its name on such a disappointing product. It is also does not whisper; it is loud enough to hear at the other end of my house. Please Tetra, make your products with the quality we have come to expect from your your company.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOISY JUNK I thought Tetra products were suppose to be good products, boy was I wrong. I bought a tank kit that has a ' Wisper ' EX20 power filter. Wisper should be replaced with 'Extremely Noisy' EX20. We can hear the thing throughout most of the house. Terrible, Terrible, Terrible. This filter was noisy from the very start. I will be replaceing it with a different brand.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from XP-70 is junk...should not have made it passed the drawing stage. Less than a year old. Plastic Motor mounting clips fail due to vibration fatigue. siphon tube and motor asembly slide passed vertical position resulting in separation of rubber connector at waterline which can turn into a BIG MESS Poor design....onceTretra unloads current inventory i doubt they will be making many more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very costly I have owed and replaced three EX filtration systems in less than two years. I'm done buying Tetra products. Each one was noisy, and each one's motors stopped working.
