How often should the filter housing be cleaned?
I have an EX 30 on a 20 gal tank. It has been running for about 5 months now with regular water changes. I have recently replaced the carbon filter. I was wondering if and when the filter housing should be removed from the tank and cleaned? If so, what would be the proper way to clean it?
The carbon filter should be changed monthly.
The filter system should be unplugged, removed from the tank, and taken apart for a good cleaning, every couple of months. Clean out the intake tub, remove the motor and pull out the impeller for cleaning, rinse out the filter box itself as well.

Tetra PF10 still flowing back into tank
I cleaned out the filter, took it apart and squeezed the foam trying to level out the size and still have the issue where the water from the impeller side is flowing back into the tank. My water level is in the tank is slightly above the outflow lip. Can water level be an issue? Any other ideas? Should the store just take this back? It is only 3 days into my purchase.
The water level would not be the issue. If you pull ou the filter cartridge and foam, and it still overflows, the issue is a clogged intake tube, dirty impeller or diry filter box, and the entire filter should be taken apart and cleaned carefully with hot water, and a soft cloth or q tip. I suspect you have something either in the intake tube or down in the filter box. The last time this happened to me, I found a fish up in the intake tube because one of my larger fish knocked my strainer off the tank.

Tetra PF10 spilling back into tank
I just purchased a glofish 10 gallon tank kit which came with the pf10. I noticed that the filter area where the propeller and inbound tube are is spilling water back into the tank. Is this normal? How do I fix this?
This usually indicates a clog somewhere. With the tank being new, your filter may have pulled up some grit from the gravel or you could have air pockets in the bio foam. I would take it apart and check it over, then set it back up to see if the overflow goes away.

What is the difference between the tetra smart 10, tetra whisper PF10, and EX models? Is the EX filtration system the best of them all?
The Whisper PF 10 and Tetra Smart 10 are very similar. The Tetra Smart 10, however, has a flow control knob and uses dual density cartridges. The EX system does not have a model 10. However, the EX systems have a bioscrubber, which the other two do not have in their systems. The other two use a biofoam. The EX systems also have a submersible motor that goes into the water, the others do not. So as to which is best, that depends on which one meets your needs the best. I tend to like the Smart 10 because of the flow control and dual density cartridges.

What is the difference between the EX models and the original Whisper filters
The EX models have a submersible motor, and a bioscrubber. They also use rounded cartridges which are container in a cartridge carrier. The old style Whisper filters have an external motor and use a square cartridge on a frame along with a bio foam.

Ex-45 Filter causes too much water agitation.
Is there any way to turn down the output on this filter? It is really blowing my fish around. I only have a 30 gallon tank and it's on the understocked side anyway, but I can't afford to buy a new filter - it would just be nice to not have my aquarium water so turbulent for my small fish.
No, it does not have a flow control and cannot be turned down. Try placing some tall plants directly in front of it to break up the flow.

have tetra whisper EX45
just got through with partial water change and cleaned filter system. We had a lot of trouble getting filter to start working again after cleaning. Is there Something simple that we might not be doing to keep it from starting right back up? Does the water level in the tank need to be almost full for the filter to prime again and start flowing? Because after we filled it up most of the way, the filter just started flowing again. Thank you for your help. Janice
This filter has a submersible motor on it so the water has to be above the motor. There is a minimum water level line on the front of the filter you can go by. Do not try starting the filter up until the water level is above this line. Additionally, make sure you remove the motor periodically and clean the impeller and the inside of the motor as well.

intake tube not fitting
I have a Whisper EX45. the washer attached to the half circle tube that attaches to the intake tube came off. I cannot see how it fit or how it fits with the intake tube at all. It won't stay on so water shoot straight up all over the place when I run the filter. Mt fish are dying. Please answer quickly!
The thicker part of the rubber gasket pushes onto the curved tube, with the more narrow part facing downward toward the filter box. You then push that part of the gasket onto the portion of the filter box. It's not easy to do without the gasket folding or curling up but if you are patient, it will go on.
In the meantime, if the fish are not doing well, you are overdue for a partial water change and vacuuming of the tank.

EX45 ok, or should get EX30?
For a 29 gallon tank with about 24 tropical fish and a few snails: Can I use EX45 or better to go with an EX30? What are the differences?
Also is that enough air?
I would go with the EX 45 since you are overstocked, and add an air pump with a 4-6 inch air stone or a small powerhead.

why is it so loud
I wouldn't call it Whisper. Mine has been loud right out of the box. I've had it for two months and it has gotten louder even though I cleaned the impaler.
Your impeller could be off balance. If you have an air bubbler near the filter, bubbles going up the tube will make it loud. If you have sand, not gravel, sand is very damaging to impellers and makes them noisy.

My Tetra Whisper EX 70 filter motor stopped working
There's still water in the filter box. I've unplugged and replugged the cord but nothing happens. Only one Koi in a 72 Gallon Bow Front Aquarium. I've disassembled the filter but find nothing out of the ordinary.
Remove the impeller from the motor and soak it in distilled white vinegar, then swab out the motor with a q tip and vinegar. This area may be clogged or have a lot of buildup considering you own a koi.
Only one koi in a 72 gallon bowfront is a lot of fish. For a juvenile koi of 2-4 inches, it is recommended to have 50-100 gallons. 4-8 inches, 250 gallons, up to 14", 500 gallons, and an adult koi needs 750-1000 gallons of water. Tanks do not stunt their growth, lack or proper care is what stunts their growth.

How far (in length) does the Whisper EX 70 overhang past the tank's edge when installed properly?
I have limited space between the wall and the back of my tank. This "overhang" distance is critical to whether the filter will fit on the back of my tank or not.
The filter I'm replacing is a very old Tetra Second Nature Whisper 4 that has served me well for many years!!
3". I would leave at least 4-5 inches so it does not press against the wall and can be easily removed for maintenance.

How do iget pump to start when power gos out
While the power is out, it won't start, obviously. Afterwards, it will start on its own, unless the water level is low in the tank or the filter has not been properly maintained. The impeller should be removed monthly and cleaned, along with the motor, in order for the filter to run properly and re-start properly.

Is there a setting for speed?
My fish are getting stressed at the current the filter is creating, but I can't find anything in the manual that says I can adjust the outtake. Help?
Other than that, great product!
Each filter that we make should come with a recommendation for the size tank it normally corresponds with according to flow rate and fish size and quantity. If your fish are responding out of stress to the flow rate and not a water quality issue (an imbalance somewhere within the water's quality can cause weakened fish also) you may reduce the water flow by wrapping a new sponge around the lower intake strainer. Please check the sponge periodically to ensure that sponge has not clogged and reduced the flow rate further.

Will the device fit a tank with a 5/8" lip, a 2 1/8" x 15" wide slot opening?
Our 50 gal. Acrylic tank has this opening along the back side of its 36" width. It also has two 7" x 13" openings that are 4" from each side. It seems that the only way to use this product is to hang it over the 5/8" lip and use the 2 1/8" x 15" slot opening for the water intake and out flow. Will this work?
I'm assuming you are interested in the EX 70 as the 45 would be a smidgen small for that size tank. The 70 is 13 X 6 X 9
in total dimensions. Outside the tank it is 13 X 3.5 X 9 so there is a difference of 2.5" hanging over and into the tank.
I hope this info helps.

How often does the filter need to be changed?
Depends on the tank, its inhabitants and your feeding regimen but about every 3-4 weeks.

I have been cleaning & reusing the the ones I have been buying but they only last one reuse so I would like to find a source for just the bags & use the frames that I have.
No, we sure don't.

Horrible noise and cloudy water
I changed the water, put in a new filter, cleaned the bio scrubber. Now a week later the water is all cloudy. I look at your website, and one answer was to check the impeller to see if there was an obstruction.
Now the motor is making a terrible sound. The water level is where it should be.
What should I do?
Let's address the noise issue first. Have you pulled the impeller out of the motor and cleaned both with a q tip and some vinegar? This would be the first thing we recommend. Secondly, the water level should be to the top of the tank. Third, do you have a bubbler near the filter or sand in the tank? These things can interfere with a filter system. If none of these help quiet the filter, give us a call or send an email, with your information for a new impeller.
In regards to the cloudy water, how much water did you change when you changed the tank? If 100% of it, you are now getting a bacterial bloom and/or ammonia spike. I would recommend treating withTetra Safe Start Plus.

week old whisper ex45 flow problems.
I have had this filter for about 8 days in a 18 gallon tank. Very clean. The first couple days it was flowing water like crazy,it worked great!! But every day since I've noticed a substantial drop in water flow. Its perfectly clean and I've even replaced the clean filter with on other brand new one. But its quickly getting weaker and weaker. Any fixes? Will I be able to just replace it? I bought it from Petco about 8 days ago.?
Unplug it, remove the motor and pull out the impeller. Most likely the impeller has pulled something into that area or something has wrapped around the impeller, and is impeding it.

No, there is not.

Once every 3-4 weeks.

I have just installed a EX30 on my 20 Gallon tank and have cloudy water.
That would be called a bacterial bloom. Once the filter has established itself it will clear up but this may take a few weeks. I would add Tetra Safe Start Plus to speed the process up to 1-2 days.

why does my Ex70 keep cutting off?
Lately I've noticed that the filter system won't be running. I can hear a humming but the water is not flowing. I've only had it for about 6 months. What is the problem?
You may need to take the impeller and motor apart and clean both of them. Most likely there is a build up of sludge or minerals causing the issue. Use hot water and distilled white vinegar.

Ex20 compared to PF10
I currently have a 10 gal tank with your old PF10 filter. I am wondering if upgrading to the new EX20 will better filter my 10 gal tank. What is the water turnover rate of both the old PF10 model and the new EX20 model?
The Whisper 10 filer runs at 95 gph. The EX 20 runs at 110 gph.

what size filter for 45 gallon tank
I've had a Tetra Whisper EX70 filter on the back of my 30 gallon tank for some time. Although the filter is intended for a tank more than twice the size, there is no issue with too much water flow or turbulence. The additional filtration and water capacity means I can put a couple of extra fish in the tank, and clean the filter less often. I would highly recommend this kind of ratio of filter to tank size. The Whisper EX70 is itself an excellent filter, and one should be sufficient for your tank. See my review for more details regarding filtration media.

Tetra whisper ex20
I bought the tetra whisper ex20 and its making too much noise!! What can i do? My dad bought the same and the tanks are in the same room so nobody wants to stay there because of the noise
Make sure the water level in the tank is to the top of the tank, just below the top frame. Secondly, remove the filter system, then remove the motor at the "minimum water level" line. Pull out the impeller and make sure it is okay and that there is no debris interfering with it.
