SafeStart® Plus accelerates the establishment of the bio-filter in newly set-up freshwater aquariums. The live bacteria start working immediately to provide a safe and healthy environment for your fish without the long wait. SafeStart Plus can also be used after a water change, when adding fish or after medicating.

How SafeStart Plus works: New filters are sterile and take 30 to 40 days for bacteria to naturally form. With SafeStart Plus, all of the beneficial bacteria are seeded from the beginning, for instant, safe results.

Why SafeStart Plus is better:
  • Our patented filter bacteria are proven superior.
  • We grow the actual aquatic bacteria that are naturally found in aquariums. We do not use low cost industrial bacteria from terrestrial strains.
  • Our concentrated formula adds a full filter bed of bacteria with just one dose.
  • Live nitrifying bacteria start working immediately to reduce dangerous ammonia and nitrite.
  • Prevents new tank syndrome for healthy fish.
  • The patented mix of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, and Nitrospira is proven to work.
  • Shelf-stable formula requires no refrigeration for added convenience.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not great Bought a 100mL bottle (rated for up to 200 gallons) for a new 90 gallon tank with sump (appx 100 gal total water volume). Used 3/4 bottle and introduced three very small goldfish. Fed sparingly and in 2-3 days the fish started to show signs of stress. Tested the water, 0 ammonia but tested at .50 ppm nitrites (not insignificant), and 0 nitrates. Lost two fish, one survived. Took a week for nitrites to come down and then detected trace nitrates. I'm guessing there was substantial de-ammonia bacteria but not sufficient de-nitrifiying bacteria to handle the nitrites from ammonia break down. This is based on findings of nitrites, no conversion to nitrates until about a week (which would be a normal time line without using SafeStart). Don't waste your money, just do a fish-less cycle or start with 1-2 tetras and take the risk; it'll be cheaper even if they don't make the cycle.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought This Specifically to Test It Ok, so I had heard about this product from several boards I belong to. I am doing a fishless cycle on a 75 gallon aquarium. I am on week 5, and I monitor for ammonia and nitrites daily. Currently, the tank is able to consume 2ppm of ammonia in 24 hours, and turn it into nitrites. I am still getting nitrite readings of about 2.0ppm daily. So I thought what the heck. If this stuff does what it says it does, I should be able to put this in my tank and it should convert nitrites to nitrates immediately, right? I mean, that is the only way it would truly be safe for fish, right? Wrong. I dosed my aquarium back to 2 ppm of ammonia (I use Dr. Tim's Ammonium Chloride). After I did this, I waited 20 minutes, and used an entire bottle of this product (8.45oz) on my tank. When I checked the numbers 24 hours later, the ammonia was gone (my tank was going this on it's own anyways) but the nitrites were still 2ppm. Extremely dangerous for fish. It may eventually speed things up, but if it is not going to convert nitrites to nitrates, I don't know how you can say it is safe to put fish in immediately. Will not recommend to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for jump starting a new tank!! I have been using this stuff for a couple of years now in multiple tanks and have had excellent results every time!! Anyone that says is doesn't work has either done something wrong by not following the specifics. Possibly not had the proper tank size for the fish they had to start with (I see this in most cases where it fails to work, never trust what pet stores tell you always research the fish you want ahead of time for an honest answer on fish tank requirements) or possibly got an expired bottle that was dead. I have never had any issues at all using this product nor have I ever even had a mini-cycle happen shortly after. It is very important to make sure you are not overstocked or even fully stocked as you are not supposed to do any water changes for 2 weeks. I understocked by about half everytime and after 2 weeks and a partial water change slowly added more stock over the next couple of months. I have very sensitive fish so it took a while to fully stock. Definitely recommend this product if used correctly!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did NOT Work I purchased this stuff a little over a week ago for an emergency hospital tank setup. I poured at first the recommended dosage for a "new" tank as well as a handful of media from an established tank in to a 10 gal aquarium. Believing in the product as I read good reviews on it, I put my beat up 6" VC10 into the hospital tank to heal up. A few days later I noticed him breathing heavy and lethargic. I checked water and found amonia in it. I then poured double the suggested dose of the TSS to curve the amonia. Tested the water a couple hours later and found no changes. Took my $100 fish out and placed him back in the main tank. Over a week later (today) the amonia has only gone up which is obviously the beginning of the cycle. No nitrites or nitrates yet. Amonia reading at 4ppm. Do not use this product with fish in the tank. There is a chance I received a bad bottle but really no way to tell. Any how it didn't work for me and almost cost me a very expensive fish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can not live without I have had tremendous results with this product, as described. Thank you so much! It is wonderful to be able to transition tanks and fish so safely. Quick start up is a dream. Also, did completed a major algae clean up and treat for my beta... so far, everyone seems happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves Time, NO Die-Offs with new tanks I used Tetra Safe Start Plus in my brand new 54 gallon freshwater tank, in conjunction with a cannister filter system. I followed the labe and did introduce freshwater tropical fish within the first 24 hours, understanding that without fish, the bacteria in safestart wouldn't have anything to feed on. The results were spectacular, we tested the water each and every day and none of the harmful spikes in chemistry happened as they often do with newly populated aquarium environments. I'm writing this review a year later and could not be more impressed with the results. We're in the process of establishing a 100 gallon environment next and will use Safestart Plus again and I have no reason to think we'll have any problems at all. Thank you for this excellent source of bottled beneficial bacteria, I would recommend it without reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I used SafeStart on my aquarium started 10/22/17 My three Tetras are doing fine chasing each other around my ten gallon tank. Benificial bacteria and removal of chloring and ammonia are a must. I feel safe using Tetra's products.
