This pump typically does not die, but it does get clogged from time to time which will cause it to stop running. Remove it from the tank after unplugging it, and slide the bottom cover off of the pump. Once the cover is off, there will be a tear drop shaped cover over the impeller that needs to be "popped off". After this is off, simply pull the impeller out, clean it, and swab out the inside of the pump. This should be done every couple of months, depending on the inhabitants of the tank, whether you have vegetation in it or not, and what your routine typically is for maintenance. If the unit is old and you are in need of a pump, the Statuary Pump, SP75 is the one recommended for replacement. Be sure to keep all tubes, elbows, o rings, etc., as they do not come with the pump.
