I am nervous about leaving the filter on while I am away. The cord reaches from the bottom of the filter, and it is in the water. Is this correct? Having cords in the water?
Yes, this is correct. This unit is UL approved for placing the motor in the water.

Hello, I was wondering if 5 goldfish were too many to have in a Tetra Floating Starter Kit tank? I just changed the water on Sunday and here it is Thursday evening and the water smells terribly. UGH please help.
Hi Genny! As a rule of thumb gold fish need 3 gallons of water for every inch of body length. Assuming each fish is at least an inch long you would need 9 gallons of water so at least a 10 gallon aquarium. You will definitely need to upgrade to keep your current fish safe and may want to get a much bigger tank to accommodate them as they grow. For more help, give us a call at 1-800-526-0650.

Is there supposed to be water in all 3 compartments of the unit? I am having an issue keeping water in the center portion? We bought it new about 3 weeks ago and it worked great for about a week. Now the water is dirty and it's loud. I'm not pleased!
Hi Lhotsedog! This filter should only have on chamber. If the flow is slowing down try removing the pump and cleaning the impeller. We're happy to walk you through this over the phone. Just give us a call at 1-800-526-0650.

I have a Tetra Floating Starter Kit and I was wondering where I could buy new filters. My daughter bought the tank in Walmart but I can't seem to find the proper filters for the tank. Can I buy them online? I have checked your website but don't see them .
That kit takes the small size Whisper Bio Bag. Those are sold in Walmart, Petsmart, Petco, and online. We have them on our site as well: http://www.tetra-fish.com/Products/whisper-aquarium-power-filter-cartridges/assembled-bio-bag-filter-cartridges.aspx

Why does the filter go out and it wont turn this filter is the worst should come with instructions or some thing
Our filters do come with instructions, so I apologize if yours were missing. Typically, when a filter stops operating, it needs maintenance. All filters require being taken apart and cleaned periodically. How often, depends on the tank size, stock, etc. We have more than one model of this filter, and there are two different ways of opening it, depending on the model you own. I will email you some instructions.

Bought a new 20 gal Aquar for my turtle. Filter was working well.I cleaned the filter and inserted a new Bio Bag as per the instr. on the box, plus (as per adv from a S Assit) to put in API TURTLE Sludge destroyer in. Today water cloudy & smelly. Why?
If you have not vacuumed the bottom of the tank and done a partial water change on a regular basis, the Sludge Destroyer is trying to remove all that garbage at the bottom of the tank. Ideally, turtles should have a minimum of 10 gallons of actual water per inch of shell diameter, a weekly partial water change of 25-50% and once they reach 5" in size, a large canister filter system.

I bought the 125 gph filter about 3 months ago and the pump motor died this past week. Can I possibly purchase another pump motor instead of replacing the whole unit? My daughter has a red eared slider and the pump has always done a great job!
Most likely all you need to do is take the bottom half of the filter off, pull out the impeller and clean it. You need a Phillips screwdriver in order to remove the outer casing, and then press in on the bottom of the pump and pull the cover towards the front of it to open it up. Once open, remove the impeller, clean it and the pump.
The pump is not sold separately and rarely needs replacing. If you need written instructions with pictures, or the filter still does not work, just shoot us an email.

how deep does the water need to be
Date published: 2017-07-18
What's the trick to getting into the impeller? It shouldn't be this difficult.
That depends on which model you own. The 10i has a bottom that simply pulls off. You have to squeeze in on it and pull at the same time. The 20i and the 40i both require a Phillips screwdriver to remove the outer cover. Once that is off, push in on the bottom of the motor and pull towards the front of the motor at the same time to remove the cover.

Someone gave us their old turtle tank and this filter. We want to set up the this tank for goldfish. Is there any problem using the Reptofilter, at least for the time being, with the goldfish?
No, not at all! While we originally designed this filter with turtles in mind, it is hugely popular with fish tanks too.

If I have the 90GPH filter in about 4 gallons of water. How often do I need to change the filter? And is the filter to run 24/7?
The filter should run 24/7 and you change the cartridge approximately once every 2-4 weeks, depending on the species you are keeping and how quickly the cartridge becomes clogged. If you are using this for a turtle, 4 gallons is no where near enough for an aquatic species. They require a minimum of a 20 gallon long, even for a hatchling-sized turtle.

will this work if i have a substrate in the bottom? have it resting on a rock to keep it off the substrate with 4 inches of water.
It works fine with gravel although you cannot bury it, of course. Sand is a different matter as it can easily be pulled in, and the filter should not be used with sand or should be several inches above it.

I bought the ReptoFilter 90 GPH, but it did not come with the rock formation that hides/decorates the filter as seen on the box? Where/how can I get that rock formation ?
You would need to build your own. The closest we have to that is the Decorative Reptofilter, which is a completely different system.

I have the Reptofilter in my 10gal Turtle Aquarium. Should the inlet slots be near the bottom of the tank or near the surface to catch floating debris? Thank you.
The filter should have at least 4" of water over the bottom of it. Ideally, the water level should be at the lip of the spillway where the water pours back into the tank, and the tank should be a minimum of 1/2 to 3/4 of the way filled. For turtles, it is best to have a bare bottom tank, and to feed what they can eat in less than 5 minutes. If any food is leftover, cut back a little bit next time, and net out whatever he did not eat.

If the whisper internal filter is the same as the reptofilters except for color, why is the whisper 20 the same as the 10 gallon reptofilter? Shouldn't they technically filter the same amount of water? And why doesn't the whisper have a lid?
The Whisper 20i is not the same as the Reptofilter 90 GPH. The 20i is actually quite larger in size and moves 125 GPH. Originally, none of the internal filters had lids, as they are not necessary. It was added to the ReptoFilter due to its being used with frogs and newts.

Is this submersible?
I have a 55gal tank that's only filled to 30gal, I don't want to sacrifice half the swimming room by building a larger land area, I also want a prettier filter, can this one be fully submerged to the bottom of my tank?
It can be placed lower in the tank with suction cups, but you generally do not want to submerge it. I would recommend a canister filter if you are wanting to hide your filter somewhat and want plenty of swimming room for the turtle. I use our Marineland Magniflow 360 for a turtle tank and it works great. It sits under the tank, and there are two tubes that come over the back and down into the water. I extended the outlet down into the water to make it quieter. It is also our brand.

TetraFilter Not Working
I recently purchased the repto aquarium package its like a box with all things needed for beginners with a small turtle. It came with this filter, put it on and it worked fine that is until today. The filter typically keeps the water clean but there are pieces of debris at the bottom like peices of food. Today the filter stopped working and its only been a week since Ive had it. Right now its only making noise its not bringing any water up. I made sure the part where the water has to go up is covered. Help PLEASE!
It sounds like it may be clogged. Unplug it, remove it from the tank, pull the bottom cover off of it, and then pull the impeller/propeller assembly out. Clean that, and swab out the inside of the motor.
Make sure you are not overfeeding. If this is a hatchling turtle, 3-4 Reptomin twice a day is all it needs. If it is larger, then go with 2-3 Reptomin per inch of shell diameter, twice a day.

Not picking up debris
I purchased this and water flows through it and the tank doesn't smell any more but it isn't picking up the dirt like the debris and stuff is there something wrong with my filter or what.the filter isn't really dirty and there are two turtles in the tank.
If the water is moving through the filter as you described it, it is working. Turtles require a lot of care, roomy tanks, and large water changes weekly. The best way to set up their tank is provide them with a large enough one that they have 10 gallons per inch of shell, then have a filter at each end of the tank. Also, the bottom of the tank should be bare, no gravel, and the water should be deep, at least 6-12 inches.
I suspect some of what you are seeing in the tank is too heavy to be pulled out by this filter. Try vacuuming the bottom of the tank with a gravel siphon to remove the debris you are seeing.

My filter motor burned out, but the casing is still good. Is a replacement motor available for purchase without having to buy a whole new filter?
These pumps don't typically burn out. Have you opened it and removed the impeller for cleaning? I can email instructions to you.
That pump is not available, no, but our Statuary Pump 75 also fits this system. Just keep the tubing and o rings as the statuary pump won't have them.

How do you put the suction cups back onto the filter?
Slightly insert one edge of the suction cup into the opening, press into the cup with your thumb and twist it at the same time. Do not push straight inward.

Does this work with....
Can i put this in 4 In of water ?
Yes, you need at least 4", any less, would be too shallow for it.

Does is need....
Do you Need the Reptolter Decoration Waterfall filter for this to work ?
No, this is a filter of its own, it only needs cartridges replaced monthly, and the impeller cleaned periodically.

My filter is making a rattling sound. What do I do?
My filter is 1 year old and today started making a rattling sound. What is wrong with it?
Most likely it is in need of a thorough cleaning or something has gotten caught up in the impeller. Unplug it, remove it from the tank and totally take it apart. Be sure to soak the impeller in distilled white vinegar, and using a q tip of corner of a paper towel, clean out the reservoir in which the impeller normally sits.

Am I supposed to put water inside?
I know this sounds stupid but I feel lost haha do I have to put water inside of the filter, like where the cartridges go??
Yes. Pouring water inside of the filter housing will help the priming of the filtration system. This helps push air that is in the system out, so that the unit can pull the water from the tank in.

Is it my wire or my filter?
I've had the reptofilter 90 for over a year now. I cleaned my tank today and the reptofilter stopped working when I had changed the filter and plugged it back in. Is the motor dead? What happened? I started it by filling it with water and plugging it in - but no response.
Most likely it needs a thorough cleaning. Remove the bottom half, pull out the impeller (white propeller blade with attached magnet), clean it well with hot water and vinegar, and using a q tip, swab out the inside of the motor as well.

I would to know how to clean the impeller.
I can see from other questions that when the filter stops working the impeller may need to be cleaned. However, the directions are not included in the other responses.
Basically, you pop off the bottom half, then pull the impeller out of it. It looks like a white propeller blade with a magnet attached. Pull that out, clean it with distilled white vinegar and hot water. Using a q tip, swab out the motor area as well.
